]]>Admit it. Your mat stinks. It literally stinks. Such is the plight of the popular but poor choice of a coco mat. How bad are coco mats? Let us count the ways...
They Shed : Coco mats shed like a Christmas tree in January! If the purpose of a doormat is to help keep you floors cleaner, then a mat that sheds all over your porch and tracks into your house sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
They Smell : There's no denying it. Coco mats stink, but it's not entirely their fault. They're made from fibers in coconut husks - thus the name - and those fibers are HIGHLY absorbent. While absorbent may seem like a good quality for a mat, it's not if the fibers don't dissipate the moisture. Coco fibers have an extremely high water-holding capacity. Meaning they absorb water and hold onto it rather than dissipate it. The prolonged moisture is what causes the foul odors they typically emit after a few weeks of use.
They Are NOT Eco-Friendly : For years, manufacturers of coco mats have touted the eco-friendliness and sustainability of coco mats because those coco fibers come from coconut husks and are a waste product from the coconut industry. However, the use of waste does NOT an eco-friendly product make. Coco fibers require a significant amount of water to process, and the process creates a tremendous amount of polluted waste water. Most coco is processed in countries like Sri Lanka, Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia where unpolluted water is in short supply. Furthermore, the processing creates extremely dusty working conditions known to induce nasobronchial allergies and abnormalities with pulmonary function. Working conditions like this are not legal in North America or Europe. Lastly, once the fibers are processed and mats are made, they must be shipped halfway across the world which even further expands their already large environmental footprint.
So do yourself and the environment a favor - say no-no to coco. There are better performing, more eco-friendly mat options available to you.
If you're looking for an outdoor mat that can handle the rigors of an uncovered environment, try our Needle & Tread doormat. It's made in America with post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials, and it's anti-microbial to resist those pesky odor-causing bacteria. It’s also fade resistant and the unique “peak and valley” design helps keep your floors clean. The peaks scrape the dirt and moisture from your shoes into the valleys that keep it below foot-level so the next person doesn’t pick it up and track it in on their shoes.
If you're looking for something a little more decorative for a covered doorway or just inside your door, try our Neighburly doormat. Its look is reminiscent of a coco mat, but it's made with recycled materials and doesn't shed or smell.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Coco or Coir Mats:
What is a coir mat?
Coir is the fibrous material between the hard shell of a coconut and the outer coat. It's used to make what are commonly referred to as coco mats or coir mats. Coir/coco mats are so prevalent their signature wheat-brown color has been dubbed "coir" and is used to describe that color even when not referring to doormats.
Is coir good for doormats?
While coir is probably the most widely used material for doormats, it's less than ideal for a number of reasons. It sheds often causing more tracking in your home than it prevents. If coir mats are in an uncovered area and subject to rain, they typically stay wet for long periods of time which can cause odors. And despite being made with a renewable material, the process to manufacture coir mats isn't particularly eco-friendly, nor is its carbon footprint since coir mats are typically transported to the U.S. from the south Pacific.
Are coir mats for outside?
Coir mats are designed for use outside. They tend to shed very badly so you would never want to use one inside your doorway.
Can coco or coir mats get wet?
Coir mats can get wet, but they do not dry quickly so they can easily become water-logged which can lead to rather unpleasant odors and bacteria and mold and mildew growth.
How do you clean coir mats?
It's very difficult to clean a coir mat. Your best bet would be to spray it off with a hose, but depending on the quality of your coir mat, you may lose many of the bristles during that process.
Yes, the tan and black look of a coir doormat is a timeless and classic style for your entryway – but is it worth it if it sheds, holds water, and creates a huge mess you constantly have to sweep up? No one wants a mat that creates it’s own mess instead of cleaning the messes off our shoes! But what if there was a mat that offered the LOOK of coir without the mess? Matterly is the solution.

Because our floormats are hand made, lining up two mats may require a little handy work... but the look is flawless! All you have to do is get a super sharp box cutter (be careful please!) and a straight edge. Score the back of the doormat until you get a clean line.
And this might give us an idea for future products! Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to watch for new floormat products and ideas!
Before:
A dirty neglected screened in back porch. The sunroom felt too exposed and not cozy enough for an outdoor sitting area.
After:
The chicken wire and screen was removed from the lower portion of the screened in porch. The decorations were removed from the screen door to give it an updated look. Pressure treated wood boards of varying widths were cut to size and painted with exterior paint. A little patio furniture, a few plants, and two double door doormats placed side by side to create the perfect cozy porch!

When an EF-4 tornado touched down in Newnan in the early morning hours of March 26, 2021, thousands of Coweta County residents were ready to help those displaced by the storm. In the days that followed, overwhelming generosity ensued. Donations of water and canned goods poured in until the Newnan Police Department then the Coweta County Fairgrounds ran out of room. Individuals, families, and businesses were eager to make financial contributions, but with hundreds of nonprofits in Coweta, how could they possibly know where their money would do the most good?
Enter the Coweta Community Foundation. Founded in 1997, CCF is a publicly supported 501(c)(3) organization that helps focus local philanthropy on the community's changing needs. Almost immediately, CCF partnered with local emergency management agencies to create a Long-Term Disaster Recovery Fund to manage the overwhelming nationwide support. These efforts give the community and its many partners the infrastructure needed to create and sustain a long-term program aimed at restoring not only local residents and neighborhoods but also the community as a whole.
“One piece we are really excited about is our homeowners are going back into their home after over a year of being displaced. We’ve created a program called the Welcome Home Project. We have a ribbon cutting ceremony and through one of our grants, Resurrection Lutheran Church in collaboration with Bridging the Gap, makes sure their refrigerator is stocked with food and they are presented with a welcome basket full of home essential items.”
- Kristin Webb, Executive Director Coweta Community Foundation
When we heard the Coweta Community Foundation had the Welcome Home Project, we couldn’t help but to jump in and offer our front door welcome mats as our gift to the homeowners! We feel like doormats make the entryway to your home feel “welcoming” – after all, they are called welcome mats for a reason! We will be gifting the homeowners a new Matterly WaterHog fade resistant doormat as they make their way back home. We estimate an average of 5-10 doormats a month until all victims supported by the CCF have made their way back home. We are so honored to be a part of this Welcome Home Project and we hope this little gesture makes them feel back at home. We love helping our community and giving back to the people who support our company.
When we went to drop off the doormats to the CCF, we noticed their doorway could use a little refresh! (With their permission) we painted the door trim, added hanging planters to either side of the doorway, and of course gifted a WaterHog outdoor fade resistant doormat and a Neighburly designer doormat for the inside of their door! Now they have a welcoming entryway to greet people!

Our Neighburly Collection of door mats feature tightly woven coarse bristles that thoroughly wipe your shoes while the thoughtful design makes for a warm and inviting welcome. The woven surface is made with 85% recycled plastic. The PET fibers are not just eco-friendly, they are stain resistant and make our mats extremely low maintenance! On the back you will see our universal no slip rubber backing made from 20% recycled car tires. A wonderful use for recycling and also creates an extra grip backing that is great for speedy pets, toddlers and children, or just to prevent any and all slipping and tripping hazards!
Our WaterHog Collection of entryway mats boast fade-resistant P.E.T fibers that are highly resistant to fading making this a mat that can withstand the rigors of outdoors (sunlight, rain, snow). The surface is 97% recycled content making them eco-friendly and the durable rubber backing contains 20% recycled rubber from car tires. Our WaterHog line is also antimicrobially treated. These mats feature a silver ion fiber woven into the fabric and they are quick-drying to help reduce odors and the bacteria growth that causes those odors and other unpleasantries (like mildew, mold, fungus). Because we use a silver ion fiber and not a topical treatment, the anti-microbial benefits are there for the life of the mat. They aren’t going to fade away or wash away with a topical treatment; the fibers are literally part of the mat.
What about the brown coco mats I see everywhere? Aren’t they eco-friendly?
Short answer. NO. Beyond the shedding and odors, there are a number of reasons why coco mats are not the best mat choice. For years, manufacturers of coco mats have touted the eco-friendliness and sustainability of coco mats because those coco fibers come from coconut husks and are a waste product from the coconut industry.
